connection with the new filter bede at West Point. It is necessary

that the motor should be re-constructed in order to meet the new

conditions under which it will in future have to work, and it is

estimated that the reconstruction will effect a saving of over $2,000 a year in the cost of pumping water to the high levels of

the City.

KOWLOON: Miscellaneous. of the $30,000 provided for the Typhoon Refuge (item 28), $25,000 is for the payment of the retention money on the contract, and £5,000 for sundry other items of expenditure. This important work was complet• -ed in August last, some months under the contract time achievement which reflects much credit on Mr. D. Jaffé, Executive Engineer in charge of the work, and on those who were associated

with him.

The excess of $8,900 on the original estimate

for the repairing and coaling yard for Government Launches (item 29) is due to the provision of an electric capstan for hauling materials, and to the increase in price of steel works ordered from England for the pier.

Water Worka. The $14,000 inserted for an

additional filter bed, which is urgently required, is a re-vote. In the current Estimates a sum of £18,000 was inserted, but owing to the need for economy only 84,000 will be spent this year.

NEW TERRITORIES: Buildings. The excess of $2,600 on the original estimate for the Police Station at Lok Ma Chau (item 35) is due to the provision of a boat-house which is required in connection with the Police Service.

Communications.

The increase of $3,000 on

the original estimate for item 36 (a), "Castle Peak to Shataukok, Bridge over Au Tau Creek*, is required to build the embankments forming the approaches to the bridge.

Items 36 (c) and 36 (d) are re-votes of money included in the Estimates for 1915 but not spent as a result of the general curtailment of the programme of Public Works Extra-
